I used to play a lot of tennis when I was a teenager. You can’t classify it as a real game. We always played doubles and the white outlines of the court were just guidelines as opposed to strict lines that determined whether the ball was still in play or “out”. Even the number of times the ball dribbled was not questioned so long as it made it to the other side of the court. As you can imagine, in this type of play, “fun” was the key thing. We didn’t really care about form, much less what tennis apparel we had on. Sneakers of any sort (so long as they were not falling apart) would do. Occasionally, one of us would be adorned with an arm band to wipe off his sweat. The preferred shorts were the ones with big pockets to carry as many yellow balls as posssible.
It was different though when it came to the types of racquets we had. No one wanted to be stuck with the heavy kind. During that time, graphite was the best. Wilson, yonex, babolat racquets, whatever the brand it didn’t matter so long as it was light!Today, however, enormously sad to say, all the tennis I’m playing is in front of a big 42″ screen TV. How am I achieving that? Well, of course, its the Wii … and if you don’t know what that is, I really shouldn’t bother explaining. It’s really amazing how fun it is to play and how your form can actually make a difference, although there are ways around it as well. All that virtual playing has made me hanker for the courts again.
But it seems that none of my contemporaries have time to play anymore. The few that I know will make time, are a bit too gung-ho for me. It becomes a rather stressful match as opposed to a fun one. So will I be stuck with the plasma or liquid crystal display? Or will I conquer all and finally make use of my k swiss tennis shoes before the humidity destroys their soles?
